The GE Building at Rockefeller Center houses the multi-level observation deck, Top of the Rock. The high-speed shuttle climbs 850 feet in 50 seconds to take visitors to the 360° view of New York City.

Interesting Facts:

  • The Deck was designed to look like the decks of a 1930s grand ocean liner.
  • The address for the GE building is 30 Rockefeller Center (you might recognize the name “30 Rock”).
  • The observation deck is three levels high – spanning the 67, 69, and 70 floors of Rockefeller Center.
  • The 67 and 69 floors have outdoor terraces surrounded by safety glass. The 70 floor is completely open-air and has the best 360° views.

Timeline

1928 1929 1930 1933
Rockefeller leases the land from Columbia University to build Rockefeller Center. Black Tuesday Stock Market Crash creates harsh financial times, but Rockefeller perseveres in the building. Construction begins on the Rockefeller Center. Observation deck (Top of the Rock) opens to the public.
1939 1986 2005
Rockefeller Center is completed. Top of the Rock closes for a $75 million renovation on the GE building that houses the observation deck. Top of the Rock reopens.
